Motorists facing long delays due to car parts shortage could have a solution


A worsening shortage of replacement car parts is leaving motorists waiting weeks, or even months, for repairs, according to research by insurance broker The Green Insurer.

It found that nearly one in three drivers (31%) have experienced delays in getting their cars repaired due to parts shortages, with 49% of those affected waiting at least a week, and 15% going without their vehicles for a month or more.

The shortage is affecting car repairs across the board, whether for fixing faults or after an accident. Six per cent of motorists reported waiting three months or more to have their vehicles returned from the garage.

In response, The Green Insurer is promoting the use of “green parts” – recycled or refurbished car components sourced from salvaged vehicles which have undergone rigorous testing to meet quality standards.

Despite their benefits, 64% of motorists surveyed were unaware of the availability of these parts.

Even so, four in five (78%) said they would be happy to have recycled parts used in the repair of their vehicles, especially given the benefits.

The Green Insurer is encouraging garages working with its policyholders to prioritise green parts whenever available, promoting a “repair over replace” ethos.

Paul Baxter, chief executive of The Green Insurer, highlighted the potential solution these parts offer, stating: “Our findings reveal that many drivers have experienced lengthy delays for the return of their car as a direct result of a shortage in parts.

“We believe that green parts could provide a solution. By using these eco-friendly alternatives, garages can reduce their dependence on the stretched supply of new components, helping to lower costs for drivers and shorten repair times.”
