Let’s be honest—we’ve all spent hours scrolling through zodiac stories, accounting for our own signs and what character, movie, or TV show we align with. We also all know our Myers-Briggs type, our enneagram number, and, like, our Gallup strengths at this point. If you’re the type of person who loves all things astrology, manifestation, and reading about your own character traits for hours, then I’ve got something new that you can also make your entire personality (guilty).
Presenting: a complete guide to your aura color to help you dive even deeper into your self-knowledge. The concept of “aura” makes its way back into our trendscape year after year, so you might as well get a sense of what it means. From phrases like losing “aura points” on TikTok (as in, things that negatively affect your spiritual peace and energy) to the aura filters on different social media that claim to show your aura color, auras remain relevant in our personality-test-loving lives. So whether you’ve had an aura color reading yourself or you just want to know more about what an aura is, here’s everything you need to know.
MEET THE EXPERT
Surender Sisodia, Psychic at Nebula
Surender Sisodia is a life couch, aura expert, and psychic at Nebula, a spiritual guidance platform. Sisodia delves into the nature of auras and explains how they serve as energy fields that reflect our physical, emotional, and spiritual states. He also explores the various colors and layers of auras, offering valuable information about their significance.
What is an aura?
Going back to our elementary school science days, we know that the entire universe is made up of energy. And therefore, every living being—humans, animals, and plants—as well as every nonliving thing, continuously radiates energy. This energy forms a special field around them known as an “aura.”
An aura appears as a glowing field of light or energy surrounding a person or object. It consists of layers and colors, like a rainbow, radiating from a few inches to several feet away from the body. An aura typically appears as an oval or egg in shape surrounding the entire body, with colors that can be solid, blended, or even shifting like shimmering light.
If you’re not attuned to viewing aura energy fields, you might not be able to see it—understanding and visualizing the aura requires regular practice and focus. Since I’m no expert myself, I gained insight into aura colors from psychic Surender Sisodia, an expert from the spiritual guidance platform Nebula. She answered all of my questions about aura readings, colors, and their significance reflecting our own physical, emotional, and spiritual states. According to her, an aura reading is the practice of sensing or visualizing the aura, where readers perceive their own and others’ auras to gain in-depth insights into health, emotions, and spiritual well-being.
How do I find out my aura color?
Seeing an aura is considered a skill that develops with time, sensitivity, and practice. Anyone can typically see their aura using peripheral vision with some practice, so you can first try asking a friend to give it a go, or you can try a meditation technique to visualize it yourself. However, for those of us who are impatient to know right away (me too, girl), you can schedule an in-person reading with a psychic or even take a quiz online to find out your aura color.
What does my aura strength mean?
Each color of a person’s aura is associated with different dimensions of a person’s life at present, whether that be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Think of an aura like a mirror that describes everything about a human’s connection to the universe. Someone with a strong and clear aura is typically healthy, emotionally balanced, and fulfilled. They likely have a strong spiritual connection, attract supportive relationships, and easily manifest their life’s goals. Meanwhile, a weak aura represents the opposite. Someone with a weak or dull aura may struggle in life, facing difficulties in achieving goals, feeling socially disconnected, emotionally drained, and maybe even angry.
The relationship between aura colors and your personality
Ok, now for the part you personality quiz junkies have been waiting for: What is the relationship between your aura color and your personality? Each of the common aura colors says something different about who you are and how you interact with the world, much like your zodiac sign. The relationship between your aura color and your personality is complex, because your aura color can change over time depending on what you are going through. Here’s which personality traits match each aura color:
Red
People with red auras are fearless and fiery, kind of like an Aries zodiac sign. A red aura indicates energy and strong emotions such as passion, strength, physical vitality, and a dynamic, leader-oriented personality. If you have a red aura, you’re definitely in an adventurous era of your life right now. You’re not afraid of risks, you love socializing and meeting new people, and you’re unapologetic about asking for what you want. The red aura is the girlboss aura—when you’re at your best, you’re super energetic, but when you’re at your worst, you might be overworked or anxious.
Orange
People with orange auras are lovers. They’re focused on their relationships, they’re super creative, and they love their friends like nothing else. An orange aura indicates high energy (which may be a little mischievous at times), sociability, and enthusiasm for life. If you have an orange aura, you probably have a hard time sitting still, because you have so much love for life, you’re always eager to move on to the next thing. You also love to make new friends—strangers don’t stay strangers for long around you. When you’re at the top of your game, you are a social butterfly—but if you’re feeling low, you might have trouble with commitment.
Yellow
A yellow aura is much like you’d assume: It means you have a bright and sunny personality. People with yellow auras are just the lights in everyone’s lives—that friend you know you can always turn to when you need to cheer up. This aura also indicates intellect, optimism, mental clarity, focus, and an overall happy disposition. One thing about a person with a yellow aura is that they’re going to motivate you to be the best version of yourself every time you’re around them. If you have a yellow aura, you’re at your best when you feel confident and upbeat. However, your aura might be dull if your perfectionism is impacting your mood.
Green
In your healing era! A green aura heavily indicates healing energy but also includes a sense of balance, compassion, love, emotional stability, and a strong connection to nature. Basically, if your friends tell you you’re a crunchy gal, you probably have a green aura. Out of the entire aura color spectrum, green is the most balanced color—like a Libra zodiac sign, they always want to find the value in both sides of every argument. If you have a green aura, you’re probably highly ambitious, but you also know that slow and steady wins the race. If you have a dull green aura, though, you might struggle with feelings of jealousy or envy.
Blue
A blue aura person is going to tell it to you like it is. Blue is the truth-telling aura color, because this color is incredible at self-expression. A blue aura also represents calmness, intuition, tranquility, and inner truth. If you have a blue aura, your goal is actually for your blue to be lighter, not brighter—the lighter blue your aura is, the more peaceful you are as a communicator. People with blue auras are the type who always speak up first in meetings, who have super spot-on pop culture takes, and who aren’t afraid to tell their friends exactly what they think. If your blue aura is dull, though, you might be relying too much on your gut intuition to make your decisions.
Indigo
You know that friend who was always a little bit psychic? They probably have an indigo aura. An indigo-colored aura might be a telltale sign that you feel a spiritual connection to the world around you or have had a spiritual awakening. This color indicates intuition, deep understanding, spiritual insight, and awareness. If you have an indigo aura, you’re also probably super sensitive—like, a textbook empath. You feel all the feelings, even when they’re coming from someone else. You’re also super curious, and you always want to learn more about the world around you. However, if you have a dark or dull indigo aura, you might be feeling uncertain or doubtful instead of curious.
Purple
You dreamer, you! People with purple or violet auras love to dream big and shoot for the moon. If someone has ever told you that one of your ideas is unrealistic, you immediately feel extra motivated to achieve it. A purple aura suggests a kind of wisdom and higher self-awareness, curiosity, and a connection to the divine. Having a purple aura might mean you feel wise beyond your years—people always told you that you were an old soul. You also have the ability to see the bigger picture super clearly. This might frustrate your friends on occasion when you give them advice way before they’re ready to hear it, but you just know your stuff! However, if you have a dull purple aura, you might be too idealistic about the future.
Magenta
A magenta aura is the combo of a red and blue aura—a comparable zodiac sign would be Gemini, who possesses several seemingly opposite traits. This color indicates a strong will and strength while still being grounded and connected to your spirituality. Magenta auras are definitely individuals who totally walk to the beat of their own drum, and they’re not worried about what anyone else thinks. People who have magenta auras are also the funny friends—they have lightness and a sense of humor about them. If you have a magenta aura, you might not feel like everyone understands you all the time, but thankfully, you still attract people with your out-there jokes and bits. If your magenta aura is dull, you might experience some self-doubt or isolation.
Brown
A brown aura is not a forever aura—this is one color that you might experience after a breakup, a traumatic incident, or when you’re grieving. Especially if you have a dull or light brown aura, you’re probably processing something negative and need to just take a minute to sit through the discomfort. However, if you have a chocolate brown aura, that may actually be a sign that you’re super connected to the Earth, which is a great thing! Keeping the vibes of your brown aura high may be difficult, but taking a walk and touching some grass will definitely help.
Black
A black aura sounds terrifying, I know. But this aura is typically a temporary one, representing a negative struggle, whether it be illness, trauma, or addiction. Much like a brown aura, a black aura isn’t about your personality—it represents a challenge in your life that you need to overcome. Having a black aura might mean that you are literally physically ill, and need to take time to heal and get better. It could also mean that you need to take some time to reconnect to your true sense of self.
How aura colors change
Unlike your zodiac sign, which is determined by where and when you were born and is therefore fixed, your aura evolves over time. Your mood, environment, thought processes, and even your diet can impact your aura. If you’re in a period of transitioning, especially, your aura might dull from one color and then reappear brightly as a different color. You shouldn’t be surprised if a major transition in your life impacts your aura color—energy is always changing.
Aura colors and chakras
Each aura color corresponds to a different chakra, which is an energy center within your body. If your aura is overwhelmingly showing one specific color, then that chakra is the one that is most activated in your body. Here’s a brief explanation of the chakras and which aura color they correspond to:
- Root chakra: located around your tailbone and pelvic bone, the root chakra represents your sense of security and belonging. It aligns with a red aura color.
- Sacral chakra: the sacral chakra is right below your navel. It represents creative power, relationships, and sensuality—and it corresponds to an orange aura.
- Solar plexus chakra: this chakra is located right above your navel, in the middle of your stomach. This chakra is all about emotions and desires and your ability to fulfill them. It’s represented by the yellow aura.
- Heart chakra: Your heart chakra is located right around, well, your heart. It represents love and healing, and it corresponds to a green aura color.
- Throat chakra: The throat chakra is all about communication, speaking, and emotional expression. It corresponds to a light blue aura.
- Third eye chakra: located right in the middle of your forehead, a third eye chakra represents intuition and knowledge. Indigo and purple auras emanate from the third eye chakra.
- Crown chakra: the crown chakra is located right at the top of your head, and it is represented by an extremely rare white aura.
What does it mean to see multiple colors in your aura?
Much like other personality types, there are different dimensions and layers to your own aura. These layers make up different centers of energy in your body. Each layer has its own meaning and may represent what your own energy is being used for at any moment in time.
Physical
This layer, located around the pelvic layer, is connected to our physical wellness and health, as well as our five senses. Depending on these factors, the layer may diminish or reappear.
Astral
The astral layer of the aura is located at the center of the chest, near the heart—it represents our emotions and sensitivity. It also has a deep connection to our own self-love, meaning it can also shift in appearance based on our feelings about ourselves.
Spiritual
This layer is just as it seems—a place where your energy engages with others on a spiritual level. The spiritual layer is located at the base of the throat.
Intuitional
The intuitional layer acts as your third eye—it’s right in the middle of your forehead. A third eye connection can be instrumental in understanding your dreams and being aware of your own intuition or instincts.
Absolute
The final, absolute layer—located at the crown of the head—acts as an overall net or field that keeps each of the individual aural layers confined and balanced in harmony with each other.
How to repair a dull aura
A vivid aura is a sign of radiant, strong energy, which is something we all want. If you notice that your aura is dull or weak, worry not! Our auras shift with our energy and emotions and can absolutely strengthen. You can achieve a more vivid aura through things like meditation, positive affirmations, or even seeing a specialist for an in-person energy healing. If all of that sounds a bit far out for you, know that focusing on self-improvement more generally will also help you strengthen your aura—whether you’re trying to build your confidence, improve your money habits, or level up your wellness routine. Once you’ve taken a few steps to heal your aura, there’s nothing stopping you from becoming your best self.
Can someone else influence my aura?
Short answer: yes, absolutely. If there is someone in your life who consistently emanates negativity, doubt, or hatred, then they can impact your aura. This is why it is super important to be attuned to the energy of the people in your life—it doesn’t mean that you need to cut anyone off, it just means that you need to know when it’s time to take a step back from a relationship. At the same time, if you feel attracted to certain people, it might be because you can tell that their bright aura will rub off on you. Tap into your gut feelings, and you’ll learn just how someone else’s aura can impact your own.
How do I protect my aura?
If you want to stop your aura dulling before it even starts, there are a few steps you can take. No, the “aura points” that people talk about on TikTok are not technically real (mouth-taping will not increase your energetic vibration), but there are some tangible steps you can take. First, set some boundaries. Make sure you’re not overextending yourself in any one area of your life, whether that’s socially, in your career, or in your romantic relationships. Keeping a clean space can also help you protect your aura, because you’ll always be coming home to good vibes. Finally, practicing mindful movement or meditation will allow you to connect to your aura and protect it from negative energy.
