At IM Marsh campus, the rulebook was today thrown out of the window as the JMU Jets cheerleading society and the LJMU High Flyers - the trampolinists.

As a sports reporter, one sees many strange things in the line of duty, and now mixed gender rugby can be added to the list. The match was predictably uninspiring fare, at times bordering on the farcical. What was far from farcical however was the spirit put into a game which could easily have been dismissed as a doss around – both teams were playing to raise money for their respective charities.

With only one point awarded for each try, and no conversions or penalties included, scoring opportunities were at a premium. Jets drew first blood inside a minute, but the equaliser came soon after. The rest of the first half was an even affair, with the scoreline at 2-2 until the last three minutes, when the Jets scored twice in quick succession to make it 4-2 at the interval.

The second half was dominated by the Jets, as they scored six times to race ahead, before the High Flyers pulled the score back to 10-3. The game wound down to a scrappy and frenetic finish, with the Jets scoring a further three times to cap a fine victory in this once in a lifetime game.

"uninsporing"? and "bordering on farcical?" - harsh!
