Best New Society Award 2009

LJMU Hockey players take on the world
PDF Print E-mail Written by Tamhas Woods
Five of the LJMU men's hockey team nominated to play for Great Britain. In April 2010, LJMU club captain Benny Kelly, along with Chris Scott, Chris Hannam, Sam Mee and James Long will travel to Edinburgh, to trial for the World University Championships. This competition can quite literally be considered a clash between the "best of the best" - in 2008, no less than 6,652 participants from ninety different countries participated in a diverse range of events, everything from full contact Tae-Kwon-Do to the quiet mastery and cunning of Chess. Should the five nominees be successful in their trials, they will return to Edinburgh for the commencement of the eight team tournament on 28th August 2010, with the final round on 4th September.

Each one of the nominees has previously played for a national league field hockey club, with Benny Kelly and Chris Scott already in possession of national honours with England. For sportsmen and sportswomen, there is no higher honour than having the opportunity to represent one's country, and to witness this achievement is to realise John Moores University's continuing and consistent nurturing of explicitly talented individuals such as these.
